Voozeo MCP or an MCP server you code yourself
Updated October 30, 2026
Coding your own MCP server means writing and running a program with an MCP software development kit, while Voozeo MCP generates and hosts the server from your OpenAPI file or documents; custom code is the better choice when you need logic that a generated server cannot express.
What each option is
- A custom-coded MCP server is your own program: you write each tool, decide how it calls your systems, then deploy and operate it.
- Voozeo MCP is a hosted service: each route of your OpenAPI file becomes a tool you can name, describe and enable, and your documents become searchable content for the AI.
Side-by-side comparison
| Point | Voozeo MCP | Custom-coded MCP server |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Import a file or documents, pick the tools. No code to write. | Choose a language and a kit, write and test every tool, handle the protocol details. |
| Hosting | Run by Voozeo on AWS in Ireland, with an HTTPS address ready. | You choose, build and pay for the hosting, the domain name and the certificate. |
| Security | Secrets encrypted, workspaces isolated, protection against calls to private addresses. See security. | As secure as your code and your deployment: authentication, input checks, secret storage and logging are yours to build. |
| Control of behavior | Tools mirror your API routes; names and descriptions are editable. | Total: combine several calls, reshape results, add rules and checks. |
| Maintenance | Included: Voozeo runs the protocol layer for you. You re-import when your API changes. | You follow the protocol, your dependencies and your own API changes. |
| Observability | Call log, dashboard and quotas included. | Whatever you build. |
| Cost | A free plan, then monthly plans from €9 / month excl. VAT. See pricing. | No service fee, but development time, hosting and upkeep. |
When Voozeo MCP is the better choice
- Your API already has an OpenAPI description and exposing its routes as tools is enough.
- You want a server for documents without building search yourself.
- You prefer to spend your time on your product rather than on a protocol server.
- You want to try an idea quickly: a template gives a working server in minutes.
When custom code is the better choice
- A tool must do more than call one route: orchestrate several systems, compute, transform or enforce business rules.
- You need resources or behaviors beyond what a generated server exposes.
- Your system is not reachable from the public internet.
- You want to own every line that touches your data, for audit or contractual reasons.
Start hosted, move to code if needed
A hosted server is a quick way to learn which tools your AI really uses. If you later need custom logic, you keep what you learned: the same tools can be rewritten in code. Read host or build an MCP server for a longer discussion.
